Role of the School Nurse

The role of the school nurse is to strengthen and assist the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of all students, focusing on prevention of illness and early detection and correction of health problems.  Here a just a few of the services provided by the school nurse:

  • Assessment and follow-up of acute and chronic health issues
  • Hearing / Vision Screenings (Head Start, Kg, 1sr, 3rd, 5th, 7th graders and all new students to Hawkins ISD)
  • Scoliosis Screenings (5th and 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys)
  • Medication Administration
  • Immunization Tracking
  • Health Services Polices
  • Crisis management such as injury
  • Education of staff regarding student health issues
  • Coordination and collaboration with parents, community health providers and staff members
